I am in awe that we can bike here from our house for a morning outing (and somewhat embarrassed that I have lived here most of my life and haven’t done so yet). Our City of Kitchener bike map was a great resource for finding the closest place to access the Grand River. Before Lancaster meets Bridge Street, there is an inconspicuous access point to the Water Bean Trail. Biking from high overlooking vistas and down to the water’s edge in just a short ride, it was a perfect sample of the Grand and we are refreshed. We took Riverbend Road and Guelph Street back home, empowered that we can bike to the water.

Not far from the hustle and bustle of the city is a little piece of paradise where lush trees tower overhead, the scent of evergreen lingers in the crisp winter air and the snow crunches beneath your feet. It is the Walter Bean Grand River Trail .

Named in honour of Walter Bean, a business visionary and community leader, the trail was built to improve community access to the river, increase its recreational use and enhance the Grand River Valley’s environment by providing a place for residents to enjoy the great outdoors in both winter and summer.

In the years prior to construction of the bridge, it was identified that certain species of waterfowl and birds, including the bald eagle, may be active during the winter months in the area of the Walter Bean Trail and the river crossing.
